Typical of nineteenth-century scrapbooks, they are bound volumes into which have been pasted all types of materials, most especially newspaper and journal clippings, correspondence, photographs, ephemera and memorabilia. Scrapbooks dealing with Japan, China and Korea, Japanese-American relations, WEG's writings, lectures ad his family have been filmed. Those dealing narrowly with American History or European topics have not been filmed. |

1. Rutgers College Scrapbook 1859-1916 Includes clippings, articles, ephemera from early 1860s before matriculating at Rutgers, as well as documentation of military service. Rutgers related materials comprise: college records including grades; commencement programmes; catalogues; fraternity records and memorabilia; records of the Philoclean Society and other clubs; Rutgers Grammar School items; correspondence; calling cards. In addition there are: cards and broadsides announcing lectures by WEG (1869-1870), after European tour; church programmes; holograph poem The Picnic; alumni clippings, letters, and ephemera from a later date. In the back are botanical specimens with annotations. 2. College Life [Scrapbook 1858-1867] Contains memorandum and commonplace book of college life with: poems; aphorisms and commonplaces; notes on WEG's college courses. 3. Commonplace Book No. 2 [Scrapbook 1866-1869] Includes College essays by WEG; College memorabilia; topics with notes. Incomplete index at the end. 4. Scrap Book No. 3 [ca.1869] Titled Original Articles by W.E.G, this scrapbook contains articles about religion and other topics by WEG and others; material on Delta Epsilon fraternity and Rutgers College. There are also articles by WEG from the Targum (student newspaper) including: The Japanese Students in America (p. 83) and an article on Kusakabe Taro's death (p. 67). There is an incomplete index at the back. Materials in this scrapbook appear to have been glued on top of an old ledger, some of the numbers show down the sides. |

5. Fukui Scrapbook 1871 [1871-1874] The first pages index articles by WEG. The scrapbook includes correspondence from, among others: Ferris, 1870 (p. 3); Pruyn (p. 3); Reiley (p. 3); Verbeck, 1871 (p.3); Wycoff; Yule, 1872; Wetmore about the TOKYO GUIDE; and booksellers. The Fukui Scrapbook also includes Scrapbook No 5 (cont). A letter from the Daimyo Matsudaira, his signature along with those of others, other Japanese gift cards and items; the signature of Kusakabe's father, Yagi, and his gift card (p. 14); WEG's articles, and notes on Echizen (Fukui) and others Japanese topics; articles and cartoons on Japan by others; Kaisei Gakko exams, 1874; financial documents; calling cards, including those of Yokohama missionaries; an equipment order to Schermerhorn, Manufacturers of School Furniture and Apparatus; a drawing of a laboratory (p. 25a). An article on Rutgers graduates in Japan, October 1871 (p. 122). Partial index at the end. NOTE: WEG frequently used the pen name of Curio. 6. Souvenir of Shidzuooka 1873 [Scrapbook] The inscription inside reads Souvenir of Shidzuooka July 1873, Miss Maggie Griffis, With best wishes of E.W.C. Edward Warren Clark, RC 1869, taught in Shizuoka and took these photographs. There are a few captions. 7. Scrapbook: MCG to Japan & WEG in Tokyo, 1872-1874 The first part of this scrapbook was used to document MGC's trip to Japan (front to centre); then it was turned upside down and used by WEG for Tokyo materials (back to centre). The scrapbook contains: pressings of leaves and flowers from famous historic sites with captions in MCG's hand; ephemera; photographs of Japan (albumen original - many from THE FAR EAST publication), with notations by WEG and granddaughter KGJ. Subjects include: Matsudaira Shungaku; WEG's house in Fukui; historic sites; displays of crafts and manufactured goods; WEG's Kaisei Gakko classes in 1874 (1st, 3rd & 4th science classes and 1st & 2nd law classes). WEG is in all photos. 8. Tokio Scrapbrook 1872-1880 Contains articles by WEG and others, 1872-1874, in publications such as Japan Gazette, The Illustrated Christian Weekly, Christian Work, and New England Journal of Educators. Of special interest are articles on the origin of the Targum (tipped in between pages 76-77), and " Japanese Graves at New Brunswick." Encyclopaedia & C./Japan/Scrapbook [ca. 1874-1900] Binding reads as the title above. Most of the articles were written by WEG in Japan or in America, 1874-1901, many for Appleton's Annual Encyclopaedia. Title page reads, Scrapbook/May 16th 1874/Tokio, Japan, and includes: Articles by WEG; organic chemistry exam, 1874; graphic materials; notes tracing publication histories; correspondence with editors; miscellaneous clippings and articles; scattered letters of thanks. While WEG noted that part of the scrapbook was to be used for materials relating to the fifth edition of The Mikado's Empire, it never was. 11. Japan Scrapbook, No. 2 [ca. 1874-1903] This book was originally a New York State census report, and the materials are glued directly on to the pages. Census pages with no items glued on have been removed. The contents include articles by WEG and others on Japan and China; E S Morse; S R Brown and his career; Rothsay Miller on Iwakura's funeral; missionaries in Japan; religion; article by a Japanese school girl on the Ferris Seminary. Many articles are fragmentary, and lack dates and proper citations. Some correspondence and notices on WEG's lectures. Partial index in the back. 12. Griffis Scrapbook 1875-[ca. 1875-1901] Materials relating to The Mikado's Empire include: Correspondence with publishers; reviews in American, English and Asian publications; WEG's list of criticisms and positive remarks. 25. Letters on M C Perry [Scrapbook] This is really a letterbook relating to Matthew Calbraith Perry and includes letters to WEG about Perry, and some source material for his book. There are 186 letters, some running to many pages. Each letter was numbered by WEG as he received it. The number appears on the top or bottom right, though there is some irregularity in numbering. A few letters may appear to be missing, but are in another series in the collection. There is an index. 26. M C Perry/WEG [Scrapbook] The contents of the scrapbook consist of: an index; correspondence (numbered by WEG), including a letter from M C Perry to "Buchanan"; journal notes; clippings, tickets and lecture notes; a printed flyer on WEG's book on Perry, ads, notices and other accounts. 27. Stanton Griffis Scrapbook WEG made this scrapbook for Stanton Griffis, his second child. Contains: family correspondence, ephemera and memorabilia, baby and family photographs. Notes from WEG and Katherine Lyra Stanton Griffis, WEG's first wife and mother of their children. Later pages include wedding invitations, a telegram announcing Stanton's daughter, Theodora's birth, and genealogical list. 28. John Elliot Griffis Scrapbook John Elliot Griffis was the third son of WEG and Katherine. The scrapbook contains: letters, ephemera, cartoons by Twombly (member of Pentagons). There are also photographs, one of Katherine (page 32) with note (page 31). 29.
